French Hip Hop Beat

French urban stories turned into an interesting hip hop dance performance.

The stage of Graha Bhakti Budaya was covered in darkness. In the shady backdrop there was only a straight white line. A blur, red light slowly illuminates the stage. And from the right side or the stage emerge three muscular men. They marched in a very slow movement, so very slowly. Smoke effect was added to make the scene even more dramatic. It was almost as if the audiences were seeing a slow motion scene from a movie.

Afterwards, the three dancers showed their skills in performing impressive hip hop movements. Their tall and muscular body did not become a hindrance in performing semi acrobatics movement. They move so flawlessly, jumping, somersaulting, and performing various break dance movements.

That was a glimpse of the performance of the French hip hop groups Cie Accrocrap in Graha Bhakti Budaya, Taman Ismail Marzuki on June 2, 2009. The one night performance with the duration of one and a half hour successfully captivated the audience who came from many different backgrounds. Most likely because hip hop is a still very popular genre up until now, but also probably because Cie Accrocrap that night performed with such an intensity and energy.

The dance was titled Petitehistoire.com (smallstories.com), that is how Kader Attou, the choreographer chose to name this piece. The scene performed on the stage mostly came from little stories of the members of Cie Accrocrap. “ There is no big stories here. But those stories were taken from the daily lives of each member of Accrocrap,” said Atou.

The stories were various. Tho Anothai, the Laos born dancer of the group told the audience how his mother used to nag him in his native language. Or the other dancer, Brahim Bouchelaghem that told a story how his father, a factory worker inspires him. While another member, the Algerian born Hichem Serir Abdallah, told that his parents said to him that his body will never grow taller.

The simple stories then put into impressive hip hop movements combined with various kinds of music and jokes from the five members of the group.

Like the previous years, Cie Accrocrap not only gave a performance. They also give workshop to the Jakarta public. “We plan to give workshop for hip hop community in Taman Ismail Marzuki, also gives a training to the children who lives on the street,” said the 35 year old choreographer.
