The twentieth anniversary of “Teater Kami” was commemorated with a play.
More than twenty years passed, El (Harris Priadie Bah) has worked hard as a theatre director. He took up his profession with full affection. He spent most of his time almost to execute training, making scripts, and training again. What a pity that such big commitment to that profession did not move along with happiness of his family life. This matter was often the source of quarrel between El and his wife. This is Gegerungan in broad lines, a new produced play by Teater Kami performed at Teater Kecil, TIM, some times ago.
Gegerungan has a specific meaning for its performance was intentionally made to commemorate twenty years presence of the Teater Kami group in the Indonesian theatre domain. The group motivated by Harris Priadie Bah has been recorded throughout its course as having produced plays such as Berita Cuaca (= Weather News), Metamorfosa Api (= Fire Metamorphose), Perkamen Tanah yang Sedih (= Sad Land Parchment).
Dialogues extracted from previous Teater Kami’s performances are inserted In some parts. While on stage posters of these performances were displayed. And different from the previous works which are more of a critics nature on the social condition of the community. Gegerungan is more reflective on Teater Kami’s course as a theatre group.
Notwithstanding the fact that this reflective inclination has not reduced the capacity of Kami in urging the audience to figure it out. The daily picture of an idealistic art director being displayed is also a (gloomy) reflection of a classic dilemma frequently faced by many creative workers. They have to be smart in equalizing daily needs with idealism to work and to process.
“Art has given to you safe protection from your responsibilities as a husband,” as revealed by wives of two idealistic male figures in this play. According to Harris, he has made this particular act/scene more as a kind of self-criticism in order not to be authoritarian both in the family domain and as an art director.
The performance of Tester Kami on the first night was satisfactorily. Without forethought preparation of the stage just began in the very morning of that day. “Kami has actually requested for a one day preparation time, but we were allowed to enter in the morning just before the performance. Setting preparations were just completed one hour approaching the performance at night,” said Harris.
Only very few viewers came on the first night. The Gegerungan schedule just appeared at Taman Ismail Marzuki’s site on the first performance date, also less publication in other types might also be the cause of that matter.
